It contains a rendition of The Merchant's Tale, a fable passed down through generations in Corvos. While the beautifully illuminated pages of the manuscript set it apart from common storybooks, its most singular feature is the enchantment which can pull the very mind of its readers into the story.

And so it is you are thrust into the role of bodyguard for Y'nazqha, who becomes the eponymous merchant while journeying within the tale. Together you must travel through a world steeped in folklore and find a treasure of immeasurable worth─treasure grand enough to stir even the most hardened heart.

The merchant pressed on toward the timeworn palace, the wind against his face bearing the rich scent of nature.
The Merchant's Tale is a well-known fable passed down in Corvos, located in southern Ilsabard. Though attributed to no single author, it has for centuries been a beloved favorite of children in the Near East. Due to its long history, particulars of the story vary greatly depending on who is telling it and when.
Prior to our most recent journey into the book's pages, I perused several editions of The Merchant's Tale housed in the archives of Noumenon and found multiple variations of the narrative's development and conclusion. Yet despite their differences, they all shared several connecting threads. Namely, the main plot is driven by a young merchant's search for a treasure to win the heart of his beloved. Moreover, they all describe the setting─Corvos itself─as a breathtaking locale where emerald greenery stretches as far as the eye can see. This is not far from reality, as Corvos is renowned even now for its warm, pleasant clime and rich soil which bestows plentiful harvests.
Indeed, the palace we encountered on this foray was surrounded by abundance, yet the structure itself was seemingly forgotten by time. Ruins oft make an appearance in various editions of the story in the form of abandoned palaces, villages razed by wild beasts, and so on. Perhaps the aim of such elements is to impress upon readers the inexorable power of nature and its creatures.

In Corvos, im Süden Ilsabards, gibt es wohl niemanden, der nicht schon einmal von „Des Händlers Liebsmüh“ gehört hat - jenes jahrhundertealte Märchen, dessen Verfasser entweder vergessen wurde oder schlicht unbekannt geblieben ist. So lange, wie sich die Geschichte bereits an Beliebtheit erfreut, ist es jedenfalls wenig verwunderlich, dass sich aus ihrer Ursprungsform je nach Region inzwischen vielerlei verschiedene Versionen entwickelt haben.
In Vorbereitung auf unser Abenteuer habe ich mich ins Noumenon begeben und ein wenig recherchiert. Die Versionen, die ich dort fand, wiesen zu meiner Überraschung mehr Unterschiede als Gemeinsamkeiten auf. Lediglich der Aufhänger der Geschichte - dass sich ein junger Händler für seine Angebetete auf Schatzsuche begibt - und die Darstellung von Corvos als „von Natur gesegnetes, wunderschönes Fleckchen Erde“ waren in allen Ausgaben zu finden. Tatsächlich entspricht dies zu großen Teilen der Realität. Nicht nur ist das Wetter in Corvos angenehm warm, fruchtbarer Boden sorgt für reiche Ernten und folglich volle Mägen, was sich in der Zufriedenheit der Bevölkerung widerspiegelt.
Warum also scheint der Palast, den wir inmitten der blühenden Landschaften vorgefunden haben, vollkommen verlassen zu sein? Viele der Schauplätze in „Des Händlers Liebesmüh“ sind längst vergessene Ruinen und wecken ein Gefühl der Einsamkeit im Leser. So war in einer der Versionen, die ich im Noumenon fand, statt von einem Palast von einem durch Bestien zerstörten Dorf die Rede. Vielleicht wollte uns der Verfasser schlicht und einfach bewusst machen, wie rau und unerbittlich die Natur und ihre Bewohner manchmal sein können.

Les Contes du Camelot sont un célèbre recueil de fables corvosiennes, une région méridionale du continent d'Ilsabard. Ces histoires nées de la plume d'un auteur inconnu, dont l'édition originale remonte à plusieurs siècles, sont encore populaires auprès des enfants du Proche-Orient grâce à leur contenu qui varie selon les époques et les lieux où elles sont racontées.
Avant de m'engager dans cette aventure, j'ai examiné plusieurs variantes du récit conservées au Noumène. Bien que certaines versions diffèrent considérablement dans leur progression et leur dénouement, la trame principale demeure inchangée : “Un jeune camelot part en quête d'un trésor pour prouver son amour à l'élue de son cœur”. La région de Corvos est toujours le théâtre central de l'intrigue, décrite comme “un endroit magnifique où des plaines luxuriantes s'étendent à perte de vue”. C'est une représentation fidèle de cette région qui est réputée pour son climat tempéré, ses terres fertiles et ses récoltes abondantes.
Malgré l'opulence du lieu, le palais que nous avons exploré était étonnamment vide. On retrouve souvent le thème sous-jacent des ruines abandonnées dans les Contes du Camelot. Parfois, ce palais est même remplacé par un hameau ravagé par des créatures inconnues. Peut-être l'objectif est-il de tenir les lecteurs en haleine en leur transmettant la crainte de la nature et des monstres mystérieux qui la composent.

　『商客物語』は、イルサバード大陸南部のコルヴォ地方に伝わる有名な寓話です。この作者不明の物語は原型が形作られてから、数百年を経た今でも近東の子どもたちに人気があるのだとか。それだけ長い歴史を持っているが故に、語られる時代や地域によって、その内容には様々な違いが存在します。
　今回の「冒険」に先駆けて、ヌーメノン大書院に収蔵されていた複数の版を確認しましたが、展開や結末に複数のパターンが見て取れました。すべてに共通しているのは、「若き商人が愛する女性のために宝を探し求める」という大筋と、最初の舞台となるコルヴォ地方が「見渡す限り緑が続く、美しい場所」と描写されていることくらいでしょうか。実際、現実のコルヴォ地方は温暖で過ごしやすく、土は地力にあふれ、作物が多く実る豊かな土地として知られています。
　ただし、それだけ豊かな土地でありながらも、今回訪れた宮殿は放棄され無人でした。『商客物語』には、しばしばこのような廃墟が登場します。ある版では「宮殿跡」ではなく、「怪物に滅ぼされた村」が描かれていたのですが、寓話を通じて読者に自然や魔物の恐ろしさを伝えるという目的があったのかもしれませんね。

Woven with golden thread, the carpet glided through the night sky, silent and shimmering like a falling star.
Although the palace was laden with treasure, we chose to bring back a magicked carpet. We witnessed our foe using it to fly hither and thither, and it seemed to obey the commands of its master absolutely. As appealing as a mountain of gems might be, one cannot put a price on the ability to soar through the skies.
The origins of such carpets are widely known in the Near East. As the maiden told us, it is said an ancient Corvosi king entrapped a pari and forced her to create them. In fact, one scholar of folklore found evidence that this legend predates The Merchant's Tale. Perhaps the fable weaves together several others which circulated through the region during the same time period, meaning that the illuminated manuscript is a rich tapestry of Corvosi tradition and culture. Its value as a scholarly and historic document cannot be overstated.
As it happens, there have been attempts to recreate the fabled carpets through magical means, with some success being seen in recent times. Oh, how simple life would be if, like the pari, one could simply drift off and be carried in the direction of one's whims. Yet I suppose that would rob one of the pleasures of the journey itself. For now, I am content to travel by my own two feet.

Bei dem Schatz, den wir im Inneren des Palastes geborgen haben, handelt es sich um einen magischen Teppich. Wir hatten beobachtet, wie unsere Gegnerin ihn benutzte, um hin- und herzufliegen, und er schien den Befehlen seiner Herrin aufs Wort zu gehorchen. So verlockend ein Berg von Edelsteinen auch sein mag, die Fähigkeit, durch die Lüfte zu schweben, ist unbezahlbar.
Die junge Angebetete des Händlers erzählte uns, dass ein ehemaliger König von Corvos einst eine Fee dazu verbannt hatte, den Teppich zu erschaffen und ihm so zu seinen magischen Eigenschaften verhalf. Das deckt sich tatsächlich mit dem allgemeinen Glauben in vielen anderen nahöstlichen Regionen zum Ursprung solcher Teppiche. Interessanterweise haben folkloristische Studien ergeben, dass die Legende des besagten Teppichs bereits lange Zeit vor der Verfassung des Märchens existiert hat. „Des Händlers Liebesmüh“ scheint sich somit einer Vielzahl an damals vorherrschenden Folkloren bedient und sie zu etwas Eigenem, Neuem verwoben zu haben. Eine eingehende Studie kann uns sicherlich noch viele kulturwissenschaftlich bedeutende Erkenntnisse über das alte Corvos liefern.
Übrigens: Über die Jahrhunderte kam es immer wieder zu ambitionierten Versuchen, auf Grundlage der Legende ähnliche magische Teppiche zu erschaffen. Es hat zwar gedauert, aber neueste Prototypen sollen sogar Personen transportieren können. Ob man auf ihnen jedoch jemals so entspannt und womöglich gar im Schlaf an sein Ziel reisen kann, steht noch in den Sternen. Ich für meinen Teil bin eine recht unruhige Schläferin und würde wohl einfach runterkullern ...

Notre exploration du palais abandonné nous a permis de mettre la main sur un tapis magique. Après avoir été témoins de sa capacité à se déplacer dans les airs avec aisance et sa capacité à exécuter les ordres de sa propriétaire féerique, je suis convaincue de l'authenticité de ce trésor inestimable.
Comme la belle demoiselle le décrit dans le livre, cet objet est connu dans tout le Proche-Orient comme “un trésor fabriqué sur ordre d'un roi de la région de Corvos, par une fée qu'il avait envoûtée”. Les recherches d'un expert en folklore ont confirmé que cette légende remonte à une époque antérieure à l'écriture des Contes du Camelot. Par conséquent, ce livre possède aussi une grande importance ethnologique, car il offre un regard unique sur les coutumes populaires et les influences culturelles de l'ancienne région de Corvos.
Ce n'est d'ailleurs que récemment, grâce aux progrès de la magie moderne, que l'on aurait réussi à créer des tapis magiques capables de transporter des voyageurs comme dans les contes et légendes. J'aimerais bien m'allonger à la manière de la fée et somnoler en me laissant porter dans les cieux, mais j'aurais trop peur de me retourner pendant mon sommeil et de tomber en cours de route...

　宮殿から持ち帰った宝は「魔法の絨毯」でした。実際に妖精が操るところも見ていましたが、主の命令に従順すぎるほどに従い、空を自由に舞うことができる秘宝です。
　本の中で娘も語っていたように、これは「コルヴォ地方を治めていたとある王が妖精を調伏して作らせた宝」として、近東地域では広く伝わる品。ある民俗学者の研究によれば、この魔法の絨毯伝承は『商客物語』よりも古い時代から存在していたようです。つまり『商客物語』は、当時流布していた複数の伝承を取り込みながら創作された物語、という側面もあるのでしょう。であれば、この写本にもコルヴォの伝承や文化の影響が色濃く反映されているはず。文化的研究価値もある貴重な文献と言えます。
　ちなみに「魔法の絨毯」は、伝承を元に魔法技術によって再現しようという試みが行われていまして、近代になって実際に人を乗せることができるものも作られるようになったとか。あの妖精のように寝ているだけで、どこでも目的の場所まで運んでくれるのだとしたら便利ですが……寝相によってはずり落ちてしまいそうなのが悩ましいですね。

3. A Foe of Flame

The pari rose to her feet, and in an instant all was wreathed in flames.
Our last foe was almost comically slothful, but perhaps I would be too if I had flying carpets at my beck and call. Still, she put up a fierce fight, and I shudder to think what might have happened if she took us more seriously. Given how effortlessly she called a rain of fire upon us, I would rather not imagine her in a foul mood.
A legend widely circulated throughout the Near East tells of an ancient Corvosi king who succeeded in bringing a pari under his thrall. He had her craft magicked carpets for his own use, yet knowing the power at the pari's disposal, I struggle to imagine how the king would command her. During my research, I came across other folktales which illustrate elaborate rituals performed when making a pact with fantastic beings. One well-known example consists of three steps: first, one must convey peaceful intent through body language. Second, one must speak a specific set of words. Lastly, one must entertain the being as a final gesture of trust.
Somehow, I wager that the pari we encountered would fall asleep long before such an intricate rite was complete.

Unsere letzte Gegnerin, eine Pari, war fast schon lächerlich faul, aber vielleicht wäre ich das auch, wenn ich einen fliegenden Teppich zur Verfügung hätte. Trotzdem hat sie sich heftig gewehrt und es war alles andere als ein leichter Kampf ... Wenn man bedenkt, wie mühelos sie einen Feuerregen auf uns herabregnen ließ, mag ich mir gar nicht vorstellen, was passiert wäre, wenn sie uns ernster genommen hätte ...
Eine im Nahen Osten weit verbreitete Legende erzählt von einem ehemaligen König von Corvos, dem es gelungen sein soll, eine Pari unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen. Er ließ sie magische Teppiche für seinen eigenen Gebrauch herstellen, doch nun, da ich um ihre Macht weiß, kann ich mir nur schwer vorstellen, wie dem König das gelungen sein mag. In meinen Vorbereitungen auf unser Abenteuer sind mir ab und zu Geschichten untergekommen, in denen magische Wesen durch eine Art Pakt gehorsam gemacht werden konnten. Eine der bekanntesten Vorgehensweisen hierbei war die Folgende: Im ersten Schritt muss der Paktschließer seine friedlichen Absichten vermitteln, anschließend die entsprechende Paktformel aufsagen und schließlich das Wesen mit einer Kunstfertigkeit unterhalten, um es Vertrauen schöpfen zu lassen. Ob das bei unserer Gegnerin funktioniert hätte, wage ich allerdings zu bezweifeln ... Vermutlich wäre sie lange vor Abschluss eines so aufwendigen Rituals einfach eingeschlafen.

Le dernier obstacle sur notre route était un duo qui se complétait à merveille : une fée paresseuse et son fidèle tapis. Au moindre signe d'irritation, cette châtelaine nonchalante abattait sur nous une pluie de feu dévastatrice. Compte tenu de la puissance de ses attaques, je me demande parfois ce qu'il se serait passé si nous l'avions vraiment énervée... Mieux vaut certainement ne pas y penser.
Selon une légende largement répandue dans le Proche-Orient, un roi de la région de Corvos aurait contraint une fée à lui confectionner un tapis magique. Vaincre un adversaire aussi redoutable n'est déjà pas une mince affaire, mais comment ce roi aurait-il pu contraindre une fée aussi paresseuse à travailler ? D'autres récits semblables évoquent des procédures compliquées pour conclure un pacte d'allégeance. Dans les grandes lignes, il faudrait d'abord commencer par approcher la fée avec des gestes amicaux, prononcer ensuite une formule spécifique, et enfin lui présenter une œuvre d'art capable de l'émouvoir... Cependant, je n'arrive pas à imaginer cette fée-néante éprouver le moindre intérêt pour ces simagrées.

　最後に戦った妖精は、あまりにも怠惰すぎる印象でした。だからこそ、従順な絨毯とは相性が良かったのかもしれません。ですが怠けていてもあの強さだったということは、本気で怒らせたらどうなっていたのか。軽く怒りの片鱗を見せただけでも火の雨が降り注いだほどでしたから……もっと酷いことが起きたに違いありません。……あまり考えたくはないですね。
　ちなみに、近東地域に広く流布している伝承によれば、「コルヴォ地方を治めていたとある王」は妖精を調伏して従えることに成功し、自分のために魔法の絨毯を作らせたと言います。今回のように倒すことはできても、あのものぐさな妖精に言うことを聞かせるだなんて、件の王様はどんな方法を使ったのでしょうか？　この手の異種族との交流を扱った別の伝承では、特定の複雑な手順を踏むことで臣従の誓いを立てさせるものもあります。有名なものでは、第一に敵意がないことを仕草で示し、第二に合言葉を述べ、第三に心解きほぐす芸事を披露する……といったものが伝わっていますが、あのものぐさ妖精には通じないでしょうね。

In a show of appreciation for his companion's bravery, the merchant plucked the sun-kissed fruit from a nearby tree and offered it to his bodyguard.
The apples and grapes I sampled during our journey tasted much like the ones in Old Sharlayan, albeit with a slightly different texture. That is to be expected, of course, since most of those fruits are grown in Labyrinthos.
That climate of that grand repository is actually a recreation of the environment of southern Ilsabard, namely Corvos. Such conditions are ideal for both flora and fauna to thrive, and thus much of the fruit cultivated there derives from varieties originating in Corvos. However, in the intervening years since the illuminated manuscript was written, the fruits have undergone countless generations of selective breeding. This likely explains the familiar yet subtly different flavor.
One could say that what I ate within the book was something like the original stock of what we eat today. I have heard that crops grown in Corvos have changed drastically since the Garleans conquered the land, meaning such old varieties might even be lost to time. Given that the manuscript makes it possible to examine and even taste such rare specimens, it has a heretofore-unknown value as a historical source. I must share this discovery with an acquaintance of mine who studies agricultural sciences at the Studium.

Die Äpfel und Trauben, die ich während unserer Reise probiert habe, schmeckten ähnlich wie die in Alt-Sharlayan, mit Ausnahme der Konsistenz, die leicht anders war. Das ist natürlich zu erwarten, da die Früchte, die ich normalerweise esse, im Labyrinthos angebaut werden.
Das Klima im Labyrinthos ist tatsächlich dem der Region Corvos im Süden von Ilsabard nachempfunden, weil es sich als ideal für einen Großteil der dort angebauten Früchte herausgestellt hat. Das kommt vermutlich auch daher, dass die meisten dieser Sorten ihren Ursprung in Corvos haben. Seit der Entstehung von „Des Händlers Liebesmüh“ hat sich der Geschmack dieser Früchte allerdings merklich verbessert, was wohl auf mehrere Generationen gezielter Züchtung zurückzuführen ist. Das würde auch erklären, weshalb sie zwar anders, aber gleichzeitig so vertraut schmecken.
Ich habe gehört, dass sich die in Corvos angebauten Pflanzen und Früchte seit der Eroberung des Landes durch die Garlear noch einmal drastisch verändert haben und viele alte Sorten sogar vollständig verloren gegangen sind. Durch das Buch ist es uns nun möglich, jene Sorten zu untersuchen und sogar zu probieren, was es zu einer ungeahnt wertvollen historischen Quelle macht. Ich muss diese Entdeckung unbedingt so bald wie möglich mit einem Bekannten teilen, der an der Magieakademie von Sharlayan Agrarwissenschaften studiert!

Malgré une texture légèrement différente, les pommes et les raisins que nous avons trouvés en chemin avaient un goût similaire à ceux de Vieille Sharlayan. Cela n'a rien d'étonnant, puisque les variétés que je consomme habituellement proviennent du Labyrinthos, dont l'environnement reproduit justement celui du sud du continent d'Ilsabard, où se trouve la région de Corvos. Des souches typiques de cette région ont donc naturellement été sélectionnées. J'imagine que les différences mineures que j'ai décelées sont dues au fait que de nombreuses années se sont écoulées depuis la publication des Contes du Camelot, et que ces variétés de fruits ont ainsi été améliorées au fil du temps.
En d'autres termes, cela signifie que les fruits que j'ai mangés lors de notre escapade littéraire étaient potentiellement les variétés originelles, telles qu'elles étaient cultivées dans l'ancienne région de Corvos ! D'ailleurs, j'ai entendu dire que l'occupation de la région par l'empire de Garlemald avait aussi grandement influencé l'agriculture locale, au point que certaines variétés pourraient même avoir totalement disparu... Pouvoir ainsi prendre en main et examiner ces fruits, véritables reliques d'un passé révolu, transforme un simple ouvrage de contes et légendes en une source historique inestimable. Je dois absolument partager ces informations avec mes amis agronomes de l'académie de magie de Sharlayan !
『商人は護衛を労うため、瑞々しい果実をひとつ手にとって差し出した』

　道中にあったリンゴやブドウは、オールド・シャーレアンで食べられるものとは味こそ似ていたものの、食感が少し異なりました。それもそのはず、私が普段食べているのはラヴィリンソス産だからです。
　ラヴィリンソスは、人にとって過ごしやすいイルサバード大陸南部、つまりコルヴォ地方の環境を再現した場所。そこで栽培される果実も、その大半がコルヴォ地方に由来する品種なのです。ただし、この装飾写本が作られた時代から、現代に至るまでの間に果実も品種改良が進んでいます。似てはいるが少し違うと感じたのも、そのあたりが原因でしょう。
　つまり私が本の中で食べたのは、古い時代にコルヴォ地方で栽培されていた「原種」のような存在だということ。当地で栽培されている作物は、ガレマール帝国の支配下で様変わりしたとも聞きますし、失われている可能性すらあるでしょう。そんな貴重な作物を文字どおり「手にとって」調べることが可能なのですから、この装飾写本には知られざる史料的価値がありそうです。シャーレアン魔法大学で農学を研究する知人にも、情報を共有してみないといけませんね。

The rippling ocean surface and shells strewn upon the beach each reflected the sun's rays in a competition of brilliance.
Every object that caught my eyes glittered like a gemstone, impressing upon me the beauty of the sea. We only beheld the scene in the daylight, but doubtless nightfall would have brought an even more wondrous sight. I have heard that in some areas along the coasts of the Corvos Narrow, the rocks are stained a pale pink, the color arising from a mixture of the environmental aether and the remains of small organisms accumulated over many long years. Again I am reminded how strange and fascinating nature can be.
Incidentally, among the several volumes of The Merchant's Tale I consulted was one from Radz-at-Han wherein the primary setting was a dazzling coastal region. In that edition of the story, the characters traversed a coral cave and walked inside a gigantic spiral shell. There, they accepted a starfish's invitation to the bottom of the sea, where the Sea King bestows upon them a pearl that glows with a soft pink light. This treasure was the one which ultimately moved the maiden's heart.
Indeed, corals, spiral shells, starfish, and such all made an appearance in our journey, yet none seemed to carry any special significance. Perhaps in another version of events these objects could play a more crucial role in the merchant's quest.

Das Blau des Ozeans, das wir tagsüber auf unserem Weg erblickt hatten, erinnerte mich an die Schönheit und Anmut eines Saphirs. Nachts wissen seine Wogen sicher noch ganz andere Farben zu zeigen. Ich habe gehört, dass in einigen Gebieten entlang der Küste der Corvos-Meerenge die Felsen eine blassrosa Färbung aufweisen, die durch eine Mischung aus dem Äther der Umgebung und den Überresten kleiner Organismen entsteht, die sich über viele Jahre hinweg angesammelt haben. Wieder einmal wurde mir bewusst, wie seltsam und faszinierend die Natur sein kann.
Wo ich gerade bei dem Thema „Meer“ bin: Eine der Versionen von „Des Händlers Liebsmüh“, über die ich im Noumenon gestolpert bin, stammte aus Radz-at-Han und hatte eine schillernde Küstenregion zu ihrem Schauplatz erkoren. Und auch der Verlauf der Geschichte unterscheidet sich in großen Teilen von dem, was wir in unserer Version erlebt haben. In jener Ausgabe durchquerten die Figuren eine Korallenhöhle und betraten eine riesige spiralförmige Muschel. Dort nahmen sie die Einladung eines Seesterns an, zum Grund des Ozeans zu reisen, wo der König des Meeres ihnen eine rosa Perle schenkte. Dieser Schatz war es, der schließlich das Herz der jungen Angebeteten bewegte ... oder so! Korallen, Muscheln, Seesterne und Perlen sind uns auf unserem Weg durch das Buch zwar auch begegnet, aber eine besondere Bedeutung schien ihnen nicht innegewohnt zu haben. Das muss aber nicht heißen, dass sie in anderen Versionen des Buches nicht womöglich eine entscheidendere Rolle spielen könnten.

La mer nous a accueillies avec un spectacle époustouflant : tout ce qui s'offrait à notre vue brillait comme autant de pierres précieuses ! J'aimerais bien visiter cet endroit de nuit, car je suis convaincue que l'océan nous révélera une autre facette de sa beauté. D'ailleurs, j'ai cru comprendre que l'accumulation de débris microscopiques dans certaines parties du détroit de la région de Corvos, combinée à l'influence de l'éther ambiant, peut parfois teinter les parois rocheuses d'une douce couleur rose. Décidément, la nature et ses merveilles ne cesseront jamais de m'étonner !
Parmi les variantes des Contes du Camelot que j'ai consultées, une mer somptueuse sert justement de cadre au récit de l'édition de Radz-at-Han. Toutefois, l'intrigue était très différente de l'exemplaire que nous avons parcouru avec . Dans cette version, le camelot et son garde du corps traversent une grotte de corail, pénètrent dans un immense coquillage, puis se laissent guider par une étoile de mer jusqu'au fond de l'océan, où le roi des mers leur donne une perle rose étincelante qu'ils rapportent finalement à la belle demoiselle.
Coraux, conques, étoiles de mer, perles... Tous ces éléments auraient pu se trouver sur notre route cette fois-ci, mais ils ne m'ont pas semblé avoir une grande importance. Peut-être existe-t-il des embranchements où ils jouent un rôle bien plus central ?

　目に映るものすべてが宝石のように輝く、本当に美しい海でした。私たちが訪れたのは日中でしたが、夜になればきっとまた違う美しさを見せてくれていたのでしょう。実際、コルヴォ海峡沿岸の一部地域では、長い時間を経て堆積した微生物の死骸と環境エーテルの影響で、岩肌が薄桃色に染められている場所もあるのだとか。自然というものはなんとも不思議で、面白いものですね。
　ちなみに、私が確認した数冊の『商客物語』のうち、ラザハンで刷られた版には、美しい海が舞台として描かれていました。ただし、物語の流れは今回体験したものとは大きく異なっています。その版では、珊瑚の洞窟を抜け、巨大な巻貝の中に入り、ヒトデの誘いに乗ると海の底に導かれ、海の王から桃色に輝く真珠を賜り、娘のところに持ち帰った……という流れになっていました。珊瑚も巻貝もヒトデも真珠も、すべて今回の道中にありそうでしたが、取り立てて大きな意味は持っていないように見えましたね。もしかしたら、これらの要素がより重要なものとして描かれる展開もあり得たのでしょうか。

Enshrined upon a pedestal of coral, the jewel flickered faintly. Any who looked upon it became entranced, as if swallowed by that strange light.
The jewel dropped by the sea-maid shone with a mysterious light. The coral pedestal itself was also a sight to behold, colored with hues of white, blue, and pink, as if it housed the entirety of the sea and its creatures. Could it have been a pearl, I wonder? If so, it would have come from a clam of almost impossible size, although perhaps not so impossible in such nutrient-rich waters. I had a chance to examine the jewel and found it flawless. Clearly, even among the wonders of the ocean floor, it was a singular treasure.
Unfortunately, it was not enough. The magnificent jewel failed to move the maiden, bringing an end to our tale. I wonder what the merchant did after that. Did he offer his beloved the jewel even if she had no interest in it? Or did he, as the maiden suggested, sell it for unimaginable riches? Such a treasure would have fetched a fortune in trade. The fact that the maiden was unmoved makes me believe that what she seeks is neither beautiful, precious, nor rare.

Das Juwel, das die Meerjungfrau hinterlassen hatte, funkelte geheimnisvoll im Licht. Und auch der Sockel aus Korallen, auf dem es befestigt war, konnte sich sehen lassen: ganz in Weiß-, Blau- und Rosatönen, als hätte er alle Farben des Ozeans eingefangen. Sollte dieses Juwel womöglich eine echte Perle sein? Wenn ja, dann müsste sie aus einer riesigen Muschel stammen, was in so nährstoffreichen Gewässern vielleicht gar nicht mal unmöglich wäre. Ich hatte Gelegenheit, die Perle genauer zu untersuchen, und durfte feststellen, dass sie sich in einem makellosen Zustand befand. Selbst unter all den Wundern des Meeres war diese Perle eindeutig ein einzigartiger Schatz.
Doch so schön dieser Schatz auch war, er genügte nicht, um die Leere im Herzen der jungen Frau zu füllen und die Geschichte zu einem guten Ende zu bringen. Ich frage mich, was der Händler nach unserem Austritt aus dem Buch wohl mit der schönen Perle gemacht hat. Hat er sich trotzdem dazu entschieden, sie seiner Liebsten zu schenken? Oder hat er ihren Rat befolgt und ist durch den Verkauf zu unermesslichem Reichtum gelangt? Und dann ist da noch diese Frage, die mich einfach nicht loslässt: Wenn selbst etwas so Schönes nicht der Liebesbeweis war, den seine Angebetete sich erhofft hat, was mag es dann wohl gewesen sein? Vielleicht geht es ihr gar nicht um etwas besonders Prachtvolles, Teures oder gar Seltenes, sondern etwas gänzlich anderes ...?
“Protégée par un socle de corail, cette perle enveloppée d'une lumière ondoyante fascinait quiconque la regardait par sa beauté éblouissante.”

Le trésor laissé par la sirène brillait d'un éclat mystérieux. Même son support de corail était magnifique, arborant une teinte à la fois blanche, bleue et rose, comme s'il avait capturé l'ensemble des couleurs de l'océan. Tout porte à croire que la sphère en son centre est une perle, dont la taille indique qu'elle appartenait à un coquillage encore plus gigantesque. Ce dernier a certainement bénéficié des bienfaits de cet environnement marin, propice à sa croissance. J'ai pu examiner attentivement ce trésor pendant que nous le transportions, et la perle était dans un état impeccable, sans aucune éraflure. Cela prouve qu'elle a été conservée avec grand soin, même au fond de l'eau.
Malheureusement, l'éclat incomparable de ce trésor n'est pas parvenu à redonner la joie de vivre à la belle demoiselle. L'histoire se termine sur ce constat accablant, mais je me demande ce que le camelot a ensuite fait de la perle... A-t-il malgré tout décidé de l'offrir à sa bien-aimée ? Ou bien a-t-il choisi de suivre son conseil et de la vendre dans l'espoir de trouver le bonheur ? Cette perle doit effectivement valoir une fortune... Et pourtant, malgré sa beauté, sa valeur matérielle ou même sa rareté, elle n'a pas réussi à émouvoir la triste jeune fille.

　人魚が落としていった宝玉は、不思議な輝きを放っていました。珊瑚の台座すらも美しく、白とも青とも桃色とも言えるような色味で、あの海のすべてが詰まったようにも感じられました。あれは真珠の一種だったのでしょうか……あの大きさの真珠となると、その貝は……さすがはあの栄養豊富な海で育ったものですね。持ち帰る際に近くでじっくり見る機会がありましたが、傷ひとつなく、海の底でも大事にされていたことがわかりました。
　残念ながら、あの宝玉では娘の心の虚を埋めることは叶わなかった……というところで、今回の物語は終わっていました。あのあと、商人は宝玉をどうしたのでしょうか。届かずとも構わないと娘に捧げたのか、それとも娘の言葉どおりに商いに用いて富を得たのでしょうか。あれほどの宝玉なら、きっと莫大な富を得られたと思いますが……それでも娘には響かなかったということは、彼女が求めているのは美しいものでも、高価なものでも、希少なものでもないのかもしれません。

The sea-maid sang a song of lament. And with every heart-wrenching verse, the merchant's chest tightened like a vise.
Our final adversary fought as if weighed down by sorrow. Or perhaps I imagined it because the genie we faced prior was so cheerful by contrast. Even if her crestfallen expression was merely a contrivance of the story, I cannot help but wonder at the circumstances which caused it.
Stories and lore involving sea-folk are not limited to Corvos─they exist the world over. Some tales portray them as dangerous creatures who bewitch people and drag them into the depths, while others depict them as friends and allies. Taking this into account, perhaps the sea-maid in the manuscript might become more amiable depending on how events unfold. We could possibly even communicate and form a mutually beneficial relationship.
In our battle, it seemed the sea-maid controlled other sea creatures through song. This may imply her origins lie in a culture which held music in high regard. Even if we did not share a common tongue, a melody might convey our feelings properly. However, I fear neither my bodyguard nor I can sing loud enough to be heard from under the water's surface. Even so, there may be a way to make a sound that reaches even the ocean floor.

Die Meerjungfrau, die wir zuletzt bekämpft haben, stand in komplettem Kontrast zu unserem vorigen Gegner. Ihre Augen waren von einer solchen Traurigkeit erfüllt ... Selbst wenn es nur eine Erfindung der Geschichte war, komme ich nicht umhin, mich zu fragen, welche Last sie auf ihren Schultern trug.
Meerjungfrauen tauchen übrigens in vielerlei Legenden und Sagen überall auf der Welt auf, nicht nur in Corvos. In manchen werden sie als verführerische Täuscherinnen dargestellt, die ihre Opfer in den sicheren Tod locken, in anderen als neugierige Meeresbewohnerinnen, die wissbegierig den Austausch mit uns suchen. Vielleicht wäre es also auch möglich, je nach Verlauf der Ereignisse mit der Meerjungfrau in „Des Händlers Liebesmüh“ zu kommunizieren und die Handlung zu einem glücklicheren Ende für alle zu lenken.
Während unseres Kampfes nutzte sie ihren Gesang, um andere Meeresbewohner an ihre Seite zu rufen und zu befehligen. Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass sie wohl eine besondere Affinität zur Musik hat. Wenn wir also schon keine gemeinsame Sprache sprechen, könnte womöglich eine Melodie unsere Gefühle vermitteln. Allerdings fällt mir keine Methode ein, wie wir Lieder durch das Wasser an ihr Ohr tragen könnten. Es muss doch irgendeine Möglichkeit geben ...
“Du fond des mers résonne la complainte de la sirène. Tandis que lui parvient cette poignante mélopée, le camelot sent sa poitrine se serrer...”

La sirène qu'a combattue au bout de la baie dégageait une étrange mélancolie... Peut-être est-ce parce que l'esprit de la lampe m'avait, lui, frappée par son côté enjoué, mais je n'ai pu m'empêcher de noter la tristesse dans son regard, et de m'y attarder alors même que l'histoire suivait simplement son cours.
Maintenant que j'y pense, il n'y a pas que dans la région de Corvos que l'on trouve des récits mettant en scène des sirènes. Souvent, elles sont dépeintes comme des créatures perfides, aguichant les marins pour mieux les entraîner au fond des océans. Mais nombre de contes les décrivent également comme amies ou amantes d'êtres humains. Dès lors, n'aurait-il pas été envisageable, dans l'ouvrage qui nous intéresse, d'ouvrir le dialogue avec notre sirène, voire de sympathiser avec elle ?
Durant l'affrontement, elle s'est servie de son chant pour contrôler des créatures marines. J'en déduis qu'elle possède une affinité particulière avec la musique. Si nous ne pouvons communiquer avec elle par les mots, peut-être y parviendrons-nous à travers des mélodies. Cela dit, je doute qu'elle puisse entendre nos voix, à moins de trouver un moyen de les faire résonner dans l'eau...
『海を統べる人魚が歌うは、嘆きの歌……その悲痛な調べが、商人たちの胸を締めつける』

　最後に戦った人魚は、どこか悲しげな様子に見えました。道中で遭遇したランプの精がやけに楽しげだったので、余計にそう思えたのかもしれませんが……物語の展開とはいえ、その暗さを帯びた眼差しの裏にある事情が気になるところです。
　ちなみに人魚にまつわる伝承は、コルヴォ地方に限らず世界各地に存在します。中には人を惑わし、海に引きずり込んでしまう危険な存在として描かれた言い伝えもありますが、人と友好的に交わる人魚伝説も少なくありません。だとすれば、装飾写本に描かれていたあの人魚も、展開次第では意思疎通を行い、友好関係を結ぶこともできたのではないでしょうか。
　戦いの中で、件の人魚は歌を通じて海の生き物たちを操っていたようでした。つまり、音楽を楽しむ文化を持っているということです。言葉が通じずとも、旋律に想いを乗せることができればあるいは……。とはいえ、地上から歌ったところで、水中にいる人魚の耳に歌声を届けることはできないはず。何らかの方法で、海の底まで音を響かせることができれば良いのですが……。

The merchant apprised the shimmering waters before him, certain that they contained riches untold.
While I tend to become distracted by grand scenery, even the most stoic soul would be stunned speechless by the beautiful sea we came upon. Beds of seaweed thick as a forest, glittering fish beyond counting, and crabs hoisting their claws up high as if rejoicing─truly, a culinarian would marvel at the ingredients gathered there. I daresay a truly skilled hand could prepare a full-course meal without stepping foot from those verdant shores.
Strangely enough, there was not a single fisher in sight, yet I suppose the sheer number of deadly creatures we encountered is sufficient explanation. Much like the protagonist of The Merchant's Tale, I am no fighter, so I was most grateful for my bodyguard's presence.
And although we met nary a soul, we noticed the plain markings of civilization along the way. Perhaps there was a fishing village we overlooked somehow. Oh, what I would not give for a glimpse into their way of life. Which of the sea's bounties did they favor? And how did they prepare them? I admit, the lack of answers does fill me with some measure of regret.

Zugegeben, ich lasse mich schnell von einer schönen Landschaft beeindrucken. Aber der Ort, der sich uns als nächstes offenbarte, hätte selbst die stoischste Seele sprachlos gemacht: Eine Bucht, in der dichte Algen wuchsen und sanft in der Strömung des Wassers tanzten, überall glitzernde und schimmernde Fische, die ihre Runden schwammen, und sogar eine Krabbe schien uns mit angehobener Schere begrüßen zu wollen - eine wahre Schatzkammer des Unterwasserlebens! Ein geübter Koch könnte problemlos allein mit den Zutaten dieses Ortes ein wahres Festmahl zaubern.
Umso mehr verwunderte es mich, dass uns nicht ein einziger Fischer über den Weg gelaufen ist. Ich nehme an, das lag wohl auch an den angriffslustigen Kreaturen, auf die wir gestoßen sind. Ähnlich wie der Protagonist aus „Des Händlers Liebesmüh“ verfüge ich über keinerlei Kampferfahrung, daher war ich umso erleichterter, eine derart erfahrene Leibwächterin an meiner Seite zu haben.
Wir haben zwar in dieser schönen Bucht niemanden angetroffen, aber das muss noch lange nicht heißen, dass es in der Gegend vielleicht nicht doch irgendwo eine Siedlung gegeben haben könnte. Je weiter ich diese Möglichkeit in meinen Gedanken erforsche, umso mehr packt mich meine Neugier und dieser unbändige Drang, mehr über die Lebensart der Bewohner dort und vor allem ihre Kochkünste zu erfahren. Wirklich zu schade ...
“De son œil averti, le camelot contemplait cette mer comme on admire une montagne de trésors.”

Certes, je me pâme facilement devant un beau paysage, mais je vous jure que celui-ci valait son pesant d'or : imaginez une mer parsemée d'algues touffues où s'ébat une myriade de poissons aux écailles irisées, quand ce ne sont pas d'énormes crabes agitant leurs grosses pinces... En un mot comme en cent, un garde-manger à ciel ouvert. Un chef cuisinier trouverait là assez de vivres pour concocter un menu cinq étoiles complet.
Or, malgré des coins poissonneux en veux-tu en voilà, nous n'avons croisé aucun pêcheur au cours de nos pérégrinations, seulement des monstres belliqueux – je suis d'ailleurs bien contente, moi qui suis à peu près aussi douée au combat que le protagoniste des Contes du Camelot, d'avoir pu confier ma protection à un foudre de guerre.
Peut-être qu'il y avait bien des villages de pêcheurs alentour, et que nous avons simplement manqué de chance. Dommage, j'aurais aimé avoir un aperçu du quotidien de ces gens, et notamment de la façon dont ils sélectionnent et cuisinent les fruits de mer...

　美しい光景に目を奪われがちですが、今回旅した海の豊かさもまた目を見張るものがありました。森のように海藻が茂り、きらめく魚の数は知れず、大鋏を持ち上げる蟹の姿まで……まさに食材の宝庫と呼べるほどです。熟練の調理師であれば、現地で採れる食材だけでフルコースの料理を作ることができるのではないでしょうか。
　とはいえ不思議なことに、あれほど豊かな漁場でありながらも漁師の姿は一切見かけず、出会うものと言えば襲いかかってくる危険な生物ばかりという有り様……。『商客物語』の主人公と同様に、私は戦いに関しては不得手ですから、腕利きの護衛として頼れるあの方に同行を願ったのは正解だったようです。
　今回は人と出会わなかったものの、たまたま私たちが訪れなかっただけで、付近には人々が暮らす漁村があったのかもしれません。地元の住人たちの暮らしぶりを覗き見ることができたなら、どんな海の幸を、どんな調理法で食べていたのか知ることもできたのに……そう思うと少し残念ではあります。

That valley hid astonishing sights. Boulders drifted through the air like clouds, and tiny pebbles crashed to the ground like cannonballs.
Among the many fantastic locales we have seen thus far, the valley has left the most indelible impression. There, magnetized rocks interact with the ambient aether of the environment, causing even the most massive to rise into the air like feathers on a breeze. However, should that delicate balance be interrupted even for a moment, the rocks overhead come crashing down at once. Truly, I have seen naught else like it.
In that most singular place in the valley's depths, we faced an equally singular foe─a lone swordswoman. She struck as soon as we approached her, as if she had been long awaiting a worthy opponent. In the Near East, a bow is a customary greeting, yet if we had followed polite custom, we would have been cut down in an instant.
After our return, my research indicated that long ago in Corvos, practitioners of an ancient sword art known as the Unyielding Blade would hone their skills deep within a similar valley. Anyone who set foot there would be compelled to fight, even if they were no warrior. If one could survive such deadly company for enough days and nights, they would be allowed to leave. Emerging from that place alive was indisputable proof of one's mastery of the blade. The lengths some go to achieve such heights are both impressive and terrifying in equal measure.
„In dem Tal schienen jegliche Gesetze der Natur außer Kraft gesetzt worden zu sein. Die größten Felsen schwebten in der Luft, während sich die kleinsten Steinchen tief in die Erde bohrten.“

Von all den fantastischen Orten, die wir bisher gesehen haben, hat das Tal eindeutig den nachhaltigsten Eindruck hinterlassen. Die Felsen dort sind von einer seltsamen magnetischen Energie umgeben, die sie in Verbindung mit dem umgebenden Äther schweben lässt, als wären sie federleicht. Doch sobald dieses empfindliche Gleichgewicht auch nur für einen Moment gestört wird, stürzen die Felsen zu Boden. Ich habe wirklich noch nie etwas Vergleichbares gesehen.
An diesem einzigartigen Ort in den Tiefen des Tals trafen wir auf eine ebenso einzigartige Gegnerin – eine einsame Schwertkämpferin. Sobald wir uns ihr näherten, griff sie an, als hätte sie schon lange auf einen würdigen Gegner gewartet. Im Nahen Osten ist es eigentlich üblich, sich mit einer respektvollen Verbeugung zu begrüßen, doch in diesem Fall hätten wir uns wohl von unseren Köpfen verabschieden müssen, wenn wir dieser Tradition gefolgt wären.
Nach unserer Heimkehr aus der Geschichte habe ich ein wenig nachgeforscht. Im alten Corvos soll es eine Gruppe von Meistern einer legendären Schwertkunst namens „Unbeugsame Klinge“ gegeben haben, die ein ganz ähnliches Tal für die Ausbildung an der Klinge genutzt hat. Jeder, der einen Fuß in jenes Tal setzte, musste kämpfen, auch wenn er kein Krieger war. Nur wer es schaffte, lebendig aus diesem Ort herauszukommen, wurde als wahrer Schwertmeister anerkannt. Nichts für schwache Gemüter, diese Ausbildung ...
“Là-bas, tout était sens dessus dessous : de gros rochers flottaient dans les airs, tandis que des petits cailloux s'enfonçaient lourdement dans le sol.”

S'il existait un concours des paysages insolites, celui-ci décrocherait sans doute la palme. Dans ce fameux ravin, les rochers sont baignés d'une étrange énergie magnétique qui, en réagissant avec l'éther environnant, les fait léviter comme s'ils ne pesaient rien. Seulement, cet équilibre est précaire : s'il se rompt ne serait-ce qu'un instant, les pierres se mettent aussitôt à choir... Bonjour la surprise !
Au fond de la vallée, a combattu une sabreuse particulièrement habile. Se languissait-elle depuis toujours d'un adversaire digne de ce nom ? Ça expliquerait pourquoi elle s'est jetée sur nous sans autre forme de procès. Sachant qu'au Proche-Orient, la coutume est normalement de se saluer en s'inclinant respectueusement... Si nous avions respecté l'étiquette, nous aurions fini le crâne fendu en deux !
Je me suis renseignée à notre retour : apparemment, il existait jadis dans la région de Corvos une école ancestrale d'escrime baptisée la “Lame infrangible”, dont les entraînements se déroulaient justement au cœur d'une vallée. La règle d'or de ses membres était de défier au combat quiconque s'aventurait sur leur territoire. Ceux qui parvenaient à réchapper de leur séjour en ce lieu étaient reconnus à juste titre comme des épéistes émérites. Quant aux autres, eh bien... Paix à leurs âmes.

　奇景と呼ぶに相応しい場所があるとすれば、あの渓谷はまさにその好例でしょう。磁力を帯びた岩と、環境エーテルが相互に作用し、重々しい岩を空中に浮かび上がらせていたのですから。とはいえ、そのバランスが何かの拍子に崩れれば、宙に留め置かれた岩々が一斉に落ちてくる……本当に驚くべき土地でした。
　そんな土地で戦ったのは、腕の立つ剣士。渓谷の奥で長らく戦える相手を待ちわびていたのか、出会い頭に問答無用で襲われてしまいましたね。近東では、挨拶のため「お辞儀」をするのが礼儀ですが、そんなことをしていたら、あっという間に斬り伏せられていたことでしょう。
　帰ってきてから調べてみたところ、かつてのコルヴォ地方には「剛剣」という伝統剣術を修めた者たちが修行をする渓谷があったようです。その土地に足を踏み入れた者は、誰であろうと戦い合わなければならず、一定期間を過ごした後に渓谷から無事に出てくることができれば、それだけで優れた剣客であることの証明になったのだとか。なんとも恐ろしい話ですね。

Intricate patterns were carved into the blade, leaving no space untouched.
We retrieved the swordmaster's weapon from the depths of the valley. The ornamentation alone marks it as a work of art, but the patterns carved into the blade itself are its most striking feature. The ancient technique of the Unyielding Blade passed down in Corvos is said to resemble other magic-focused sword schools, wherein the user channels aether into their weapon and unleashes it as an attack. Likely the patterns on the blade served to condense the wielder's aether, thus amplifying the power of such strikes.
This background explains why the valley became a training ground for aspiring swordmasters. The rocks there were so strongly magnetized that they floated in the air. By pouring lightning-aspected aether into them, one could strengthen the magnetism further. Conversely, earth-aspected aether could be used to weaken the effect. By honing one's mastery over the rocks in the valley, a prospective swordmaster could apply such knowledge to their deadly art.
In fact, we were able to observe several of the once-floating rocks strewn about the ground during our journey. I wonder what would happen if we infused them with aether somehow? At the very least, we would have a taste of the grueling training endured by the swordmasters.

Der Schatz, den wir aus dem Tal mit nach Hause brachten, war die Klinge der Schwertmeisterin, die wir dort besiegt hatten. Allein schon die filigranen Verzierungen des Schwertes machen es zu einem wahren Kunstwerk, aber es sind die in die Klinge eingravierten Muster, die mich besonders faszinierten. Bei der uralten Technik „Unbeugsame Klinge“, die seit jeher in der Region Corvos weitergegeben wurde, wird Äther in die Waffe geleitet, um magische Angriffe ausführen zu können. Wahrscheinlich dienten die Muster auf der Klinge dazu, den Äther zu verdichten und so die Schlagkraft dieser machtvollen Technik zu verstärken.
Dieser Hintergrund erklärt auch, warum ausgerechnet dieses Tal zu einem Übungsplatz für angehende Schwertmeister wurde. Die Felsen dort waren so stark magnetisiert, dass sie in der Luft schwebten. Vermutlich übten die angehenden Schwertmeister, die Felsen bei schwachem Magnetismus mithilfe von Blitzäther und starken Magnetismus mithilfe von Erdäther anzuheben. Eine solch präzise Beherrschung des Äthers dürfte ihnen dabei geholfen haben, die alte Geheimtechnik zu meistern.
Auf unserer Reise durch die Geschichte habe ich hier und da ganz ähnliche Felsen wie die im Tal gesehen. Ich frage mich, was passieren wäre, wenn wir sie mit Äther geladen hätten? Zumindest hätten wir einen Eindruck von der anstrengenden Ausbildung bekommen, die die Schwertmeister durchlaufen mussten.

Le trésor enfoui dans les profondeurs du ravin était “l'épée du maître d'armes”. Son ornementation était splendide, au point de l'élever indubitablement en une œuvre d'art, mais ce sont surtout les motifs gravés sur la lame qui la distinguaient. En effet, l'école de la “Lame infrangible” utilisait une technique à base d'éther imprégné dans l'arme afin de lancer des attaques magiques ; selon toute vraisemblance, lesdits motifs servaient à compresser cet éther, augmentant ainsi la puissance des coups.
Connaître l'origine de cette technique permet donc de comprendre pourquoi cette région servait de lieu d'entraînement aux épéistes qui la pratiquaient. Le champ magnétique du ravin était si puissant que les roches y lévitaient en permanence. L'ajout d'éther de foudre renforçait encore davantage le magnétisme, tandis que l'éther de terre l'affaiblissait. Il semblerait donc que la maîtrise de la manipulation de ces roches était directement liée à la progression dans la hiérarchie de la Lame infrangible.
En parcourant les lieux, on constate pourtant que des pierres dotées de propriétés flottantes s'accumulent à certains endroits du sol. À l'instar d'un apprenti de cette école de bretteurs, il serait intéressant de les charger en éther pour étudier le résultat.

　渓谷の奥地から持ち帰った宝は、「ソードマスターの剣」でした。装飾も美しく、美術品としても価値がありそうでしたが、やはり一番の特徴は刀身に刻まれた文様でしょう。「剛剣」という流派は、武器にエーテルを込めて攻撃を放つ一種の魔法剣のような剣技を使ったとされています。おそらく、この魔法的文様によって、剣に込められたエーテルを圧縮することで、技の威力を高めていたのでしょう。
　そうした剣技の背景を知ることで、あの土地が剣士たちの修行の場となっていた理由も推測できそうです。渓谷の岩は、空中に浮かび上がってしまうほど強い磁力を帯びていました。そこに雷属性のエーテルを流し込めば磁力を強めることができる。逆に磁力を弱めたければ、土属性のエーテルを流し込めばいい。このようにして岩を操作する術を学ぶことが、剛剣の習熟に直結していたのでしょう。
　今回の旅の道中にも、浮き沈みする特性を持った岩が地面に転がっている場所がありました。剛剣使いの修行を体験するつもりで、あの岩にエーテルを充填できるか試してみるのも面白そうですね。

While the master of the Unyielding Blade wielded but a single sword, it cut from all directions at once.
Our last foe was a practitioner of an ancient style of swordplay known as the Unyielding Blade. Never did I think I would behold such techniques with my own eyes, so the encounter was a pleasant but deadly surprise. In the real world, the swordmasters of the Unyielding Blade were systematically slaughtered in the war against the Garlean Empire. While some apparently survived this purge, they could not bear imperial oppression and rose up in a failed rebellion. At last, the final swordmaster was taken captive and met an unjust end, or so I have heard. Stories say that in ages past, the esoteric order would offer demonstrations of their skills as a show of loyalty to the royal family─yet another tradition that was stamped out under the imperial heel.
Recalling such displays reminds me of a scene in an edition of The Merchant's Tale written for children. In it, the characters reach a stage which shone in rainbow hues. It was built not for a king or queen, but as a ceremonial place to make an offering of friendship to a different race of people. If kings take pleasure in displays of martial prowess, what would pique the interest of an entirely different race? Gaining an understanding of the story's cultural background should allow us to anticipate the tale's twists before they happen, and use that insight to drive our actions while within the book.

Unser letzter Kampf war gegen eine Meisterin einer Schwertkunst namens „Unbeugsame Klinge“, die aus Corvos stammt. Niemals hätte ich mir vorstellen können, eine Schwertmeisterin von solcher Anmut und mit einem solchen Kampfgeschick mit eigenen Augen bestaunen zu dürfen. In der realen Welt wurden die Meister der „Unbeugsamen Klinge“ einst im Krieg gegen die Garlear systematisch getötet. Zwar gab es einige wenige Überlebende, doch sie rebellierten gegen ihre Unterdrückung und wurden daraufhin vernichtet, bis auch der letzte Schwertmeister eines grausamen Todes starb ... Es wird erzählt, dass die Schwertmeister von Corvos zu ihrer Blütezeit ihre Fähigkeiten als Zeichen der Loyalität gegenüber der königlichen Familie regelmäßig zur Schau stellten. Doch inzwischen ist auch diese Tradition längst in Vergessenheit geraten.
Da kommt mir eine Szene in den Sinn, die ich in einer Version von „Des Händlers Liebesmüh“, die speziell an Kinder gerichtet ist, gelesen habe. Dort erreichen die Helden der Geschichte eine Bühne, die in allen Farben des Regenbogens erstrahlte. Diese Bühne war allerdings nicht für die königliche Familie erbaut worden, sondern ein zeremonieller Ort, um anderen Völkern gegenüber Freundschaft und Wohlwollen zu bekunden. Wie diese Zeremonien wohl ausgesehen haben könnten? Wenn wir den kulturellen Hintergrund der Geschichte verstehen, könnten wir in der Lage sein, die Wendungen der Erzählung vorauszusehen und diese Gabe zu nutzen, um die Handlung des Buches zu beeinflussen.

Au bout du chemin se trouvait le maître d'armes de la Lame infrangible, une technique ancestrale de la région de Corvos. Voir l'un d'entre eux se mettre en travers de notre route fut une véritable surprise, car ils étaient censés avoir été éradiqués au cours des conflits contre l'empire de Garlemald. Certes, quelques-uns ont vaillamment résisté jusqu'au bout, mais ils furent tous éliminés jusqu'à ce que le dernier d'entre eux soit capturé et connaisse une fin des plus tragiques. On raconte aussi que les adeptes de la Lame infrangible effectuaient des danses martiales afin de prouver leur loyauté envers leur souverain, mais cette tradition s'est également perdue.
En ce qui concerne ce genre de performance scénique, il se trouve que les Contes du Camelot contiennent un spectacle de danse similaire dans un décor arc-en-ciel. Toutefois, il n'est pas destiné à la royauté, mais à un autre peuple. Or, si l'objectif du roi était d'augmenter sans fin sa puissance, quel était celui de ce nouveau public ? Il est essentiel de comprendre ces subtilités culturelles afin de prévoir le déroulement de l'histoire et d'agir en conséquence au sein du récit.

　最後に戦った剣士は、コルヴォ地方に伝わる古式剣術「剛剣」の使い手でした。まさかこの目で見ることが叶うとは思っていなかったので、本当に驚きました。というのも、現実の剛剣使いたちはガレマール帝国との戦いの中で、次々と斃れていってしまったからです。少数の生き残りもいたようですが、帝国の圧政に耐えかねて反乱を起こしては粛清されていき……ついには最後の「ソードマスター」も囚われの身となり、後に非業の死を遂げたのだとか。かつて剛剣使いたちは、王族に対して忠誠を誓うため、演武を捧げたとも伝え聞きますが、そうした伝統文化も絶えてしまったというわけです。
　演武と言えば、私が読んだ子ども向けの『商客物語』の装飾写本の中には、虹色に輝く演舞台にたどり着く、といった展開が描かれたものもありました。それは王族向けのものではなく、異種族に捧げものをする儀式の場でした。王が武を求めるのだとしたら、異種族は何を人々に求めたのでしょうか。文化的な背景を知ることで、物語の展開を先読みして、本の中での行動に活かすこともできるかもしれませんね。

Where the very earth disobeyed nature's rules, the merchant walked a fine line between life and death with every step.
Life somehow finds a way to thrive in even the harshest environs. Although this is but my own theory, I think the struggle to survive makes both flora and fauna more delicious. I tested this theory on the mushrooms that clung to rocky surfaces of the valley walls, and I stand firm in its truth, for they were exquisite. Though they had the look and feel of hard stone, they melted in my mouth like soft cream. Blessed with both a striking texture and rich flavor, the mushrooms could serve as an aromatic accent in any number of dishes.
Curious as to whether such mushrooms existed in the real world, I researched an illustrated encyclopedia and found one that looked almost identical. Imagine my surprise when the description indicated strong hallucinatory effects. Perhaps because the world inside the book is an illusion to begin with, such effects were not reproduced. Regardless, I realized anew the danger of putting unfamiliar plant life in my mouth. I was cautious enough when traversing that valley of floating rocks─I should practice that same caution when next a strange new specimen rouses my appetite.

Das Leben findet irgendwie immer einen Weg, selbst in den rauesten Umgebungen zu gedeihen. Und hier kommt meine persönliche Theorie ins Spiel: Die widerstandsfähigsten sind in der Regel auch die schmackhaftesten. Die Pilze, die an den Wänden der Schlucht wachsen, sind ein perfektes Beispiel dafür. Sie sahen aus wie gewöhnliche Steine und fühlten sich auch so an, aber sobald ich sie im Mund hatte, schmolzen sie förmlich auf meiner Zunge. Was für eine Offenbarung, eine wahre Delikatesse! Und so aromatisch! Mit ihrem intensiven Aroma eignen sie sich bestimmt als wunderbare Würze, um den Geschmack verschiedener Gerichte zu verfeinern.
Nach unserer Rückkehr habe ich mich gleich auf die Suche nach einem Gegenstück in unserer Welt gemacht. Und ich habe tatsächlich einen Pilz gefunden, der dem aus der Schlucht zum Verwechseln ähnlich sieht! Allerdings war dabei vermerkt, dass er eine starke halluzinogene Wirkung haben soll ... Möglicherweise war das bei den Exemplaren aus der Schlucht nicht der Fall, weil die Welt in dem Buch von vornherein eine Illusion ist. Unabhängig davon wurde mir wieder bewusst, wie gefährlich es sein kann, unbekannte Pflanzen zu verzehren. Man sollte sich wirklich nicht alles in den Mund stecken, was lecker aussieht, das habe ich mir jetzt zu Herzen genommen ...
“Dans un ravin où de lourds rochers lévitent, le moindre pas en avant peut s'avérer fatal.”

Certaines espèces sont capables de survivre dans n'importe quel environnement, même les plus hostiles. D'ailleurs, si je puis me permettre une opinion personnelle, les plus robustes sont généralement les plus savoureuses ! Les champignons qui poussent sur les parois du ravin en sont une illustration parfaite : leur aspect et leur texture étaient durs comme la pierre, mais en bouche, ils fondent sur la langue telle la neige au soleil. Un véritable délice, ni plus ni moins ! En outre, avec un goût aussi intense, c'est un assaisonnement idéal pour rehausser la saveur de divers plats.
En parcourant les pages d'une encyclopédie pour trouver des champignons similaires, j'en ai découvert un composé de puissants éléments hallucinogènes. Ce genre d'effet secondaire était sans doute impossible à reproduire dans un univers virtuel comme celui du livre ; malgré cela, il est bon de rappeler que la consommation de champignons aux propriétés inconnues doit être évitée à tout prix. Mieux vaut toujours faire attention à ce qu'on mange, tout comme on regarde où on met les pieds dans un ravin où les pierres ont l'idée saugrenue de flotter dans les airs.

　どんなに過酷な環境であっても、そこに適応して生き延びる種はいるものです。そして、これは私の持論なのですが、強い生命力を持つたくましい生き物は、とっても美味しい！　ということで、渓谷の岩肌に張り付くように生えていたキノコを試してみたのですが、控えめに表現しても絶品でした。見た目も手触りも固い岩のようでしたが、口に含むと、フワッとほどけるように溶けたんです。もちろん良かったのは食感だけではありません。風味が濃厚でしたので、香り付けとして様々な料理で活躍してくれそうです。
　現実世界でも似たものがないか図鑑で調べてみたところ、見た目がそっくりで、強い幻覚作用のあるキノコが見つかりました。もとより幻を紡いで出来上がった本の中の世界ですから、幻覚作用までは再現できていなかったということでしょうか。何にせよ、見知らぬキノコを、ホイホイと食べるのは危険ということですね。岩が宙に浮く渓谷を進む際に、次の一歩を踏み出す先が崩れないか注意しながら進むように、口に入れるものについては慎重に選ぼうと反省した次第です。

It was the soot-covered plate which the maiden treasured above all.
Almost buried in ash, the ruins standing by the sea were once home to the maiden who appears at the beginning of the story. It seems the people who lived there shared a type of fellowship with the sea-folk, using an altar to interact with them and exchange various goods. That was, until the day the Dandan appeared to threaten their peaceful lives. Stories tell of a brave young man who secluded himself in the mountains to hone his body and mind that he might fell the dread beast, but the Dandan did not wait. In time the village succumbed to its wrath. Bereft of both family and home, the young maiden drifted aimlessly until she reached the city where the book begins.
No matter how lustrous, no treasure could soothe such a troubled heart. Yet that soot-covered plate was enough to stir memories of the maiden's family, allowing her to face her past and turn her gaze to the future. Having risked life and limb to bring back something so precious, surely the young merchant became a trustworthy companion to the maiden.
Finding the item our clients request is indeed a gleaner's primary duty, yet at times it seems even the clients themselves are unaware of their true desire. To read between and beyond the client's words and find what they genuinely consider to be of “worth immeasurable” is our true task. That was what my father showed me, and I will keep that lesson close at heart as I continue my own journey.

Die verbrannten Ruinen am Meer waren in Wirklichkeit einst das Zuhause der jungen Angebeteten des Händlers. Es scheint, dass die damaligen Dorfbewohner eine Art Gemeinschaft mit den Meeresbewohnern pflegten und einen Altar nutzten, um mit ihnen zu interagieren und verschiedene Waren zu tauschen ... Bis zu jenem Tag, als der schreckliche Dandan auftauchte und die Tage des Friedens jäh beendete. Einige Geschichten erzählen von einem tapferen jungen Mann, der sich in die Berge zurückzog, um seinen Körper und Geist zu stählen, um das furchterregende Ungeheuer besiegen zu können, doch als er zurückkehrte, war es bereits zu spät: Das Dorf und seine Bewohner waren Geschichte.
Ihrer Familie und ihres Zuhauses beraubt, irrte die junge Frau ziellos umher, bis sie die Stadt erreichte, in der das Buch beginnt.
Kein Schatz der Welt vermochte ihren Kummer zu lindern. Einzig und allein der verrußte Teller, der tröstende Erinnerungen an ihre Liebsten in sich trug, ließ sie den Schmerz überwinden und mit neuem Mut in die Zukunft blicken. Und der junge Händler, der sein Leben für sie riskiert hatte, hatte sich in ihren Augen als vertrauenswürdiger Begleiter erwiesen.
Die Hauptaufgabe eines Klaubers besteht darin, gewünschte Gegenstände zu beschaffen. Manchmal kommt es allerdings vor, dass ein Kunde selbst nicht weiß, was er wirklich will. Und heute weiß ich, wie bedeutsam die Lektion meines Vaters war: Die Fähigkeit, aufmerksam zuzuhören und zwischen den Zeilen zu lesen, um herauszufinden, was für einen Kunden wirklich von unschätzbarem Wert ist - das ist es, was einen herausragenden Klauber ausmacht.
“Malgré les apparences, c'était l'assiette couverte de suie qui, aux yeux de la belle demoiselle, avait une valeur inestimable.”

Les ruines enduites de cendres qui longeaient le bord de mer étaient celles du lieu natal de notre commanditaire. Les villageois avaient pour habitude de communiquer avec les sirènes par l'intermédiaire d'un autel, où ils leur faisaient des offrandes en puisant dans les produits de la terre et de l'océan... jusqu'au jour où l'apparition du monstrueux poisson géant Dandan bouleversât leur existence. Pensant pouvoir sauver les siens, un jeune homme courageux partit s'entraîner dans la montagne pour affronter l'horrible créature, mais celle-ci ne perdit pas son temps à l'attendre : face à la destruction impitoyable de son village, la demoiselle, n'ayant plus personne au monde, alla se réfugier dans la cité qui marque le début du récit.
Aucun trésor ne pouvait apaiser le chagrin de la pauvre jeune fille, hormis l'assiette couverte de suie qui lui rappelait les souvenirs des moments heureux, et lui donnait ainsi le courage d'aller de l'avant sans se laisser abattre. Quant au camelot qui a risqué sa vie pour dénicher la seule chose qui comptait à ses yeux, nul doute qu'il se sera montré digne de sa confiance.
Rapporter les objets demandés est la mission principale de tout glaneur, mais contre toute attente, il arrive parfois que le client lui-même ignore ce qu'il désire vraiment. C'est dans ces moments-là que l'idéal transmis par mon père prend tout sens : la capacité de découvrir, à travers l'écoute la plus attentive, ce qui a une valeur inestimable pour autrui.

　海沿いに佇む灰まみれの廃墟は、物語の冒頭に登場した「娘」の生まれ故郷でした。村の住人たちは人魚たちと祭壇を通して交流し、陸と海の産物を交換して共存していたようです。ですが、あるとき怪物ダンダーンが現れ、その暮らしが脅かされるようになりました。勇気ある若者が村を救う力を得るべく、山籠もりの修行に出たそうですが、怪物が待ってくれるはずもなく……結局、村は滅びてしまったようです。そして、家族と故郷を喪った娘は、物語の出発点となるあの街へと流れ着いたのでした。
　そんな境遇の娘にとって、どんな宝も哀しみを癒してはくれません。ですが、煤まみれの皿は、家族の想い出を呼び起こすのに十分であり、過去と向き合い、未来に目を向ける切っ掛けとなりました。そして、そんな真の宝を命がけで持ち帰ってきてくれた若き商人こそ、信頼に足る人物と映ったのでしょう。
　依頼の品を持ち帰るのがグリーナーの使命ではありますが、依頼主さえ真に望む品が何かわかっていない場合があるようです。依頼人の心に寄り添い、真に「計り知れぬほど価値ある品」を見出す――父が示してくれた理想に向けて、私は歩んでいこうと決意したのでした。
